143 Whatever Happened To Hobbies?
You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.
Have you noticed people these days don’t have hobbies like they used to?
You might not. You’d have to be old enough to compare today (the 2020s) with the 1970s-90s or so.
Over those decades, our society has experienced a decline in hobbies.
In this episode, we talk about why, and recall the hobbies we had, way back when.
We talk about why hobbies are a healthy thing.
Here’s a list of things we mention:
listening to a new album (on CD or cassette!) from start to finish, and reading liner notes (!)
writing, drawing, crafting
increased wealth inequality, increased expenses and costs of living, no rise in wages for the common person
social media, and social comparison
the “hobby” dies and the “side hustle” and “monetization” is born
doing something just because you enjoy it, and that being a perfectly good and complete reason, without needing it to make money
being able to have hobbies is healthy
