188 Intro To Energy Clearing

See this content in the original post

Have you ever felt sorta gross and grimy and a shower only helped so much, because the space you were in, itself, somehow felt heavy or gross?

Well, if you have authority over that space, because it’s your home, or your room, or your office, you could do what’s called Space Clearing or Energy Clearing.

In this episode, we talk about the mindset and methods we’ve used to "clear a space."

It actually goes by various names.

And there are various ways to go about it.

But whatever form it takes, the reason and the mindset in undertaking it is generally the same.

For us…

The Reason for Energy Clearing

For us, the reason is to “do energy clearing” is to express support for, and in turn feel more supported by, our near surroundings. To be a good caretaker of that space and place. To be in right relationship with it and with its elements – the ground, the winds and the air, the artifacts of our daily life, and all the creatures that come through it, inhabit it, surround it, and support it. In short, to be a responsible and engaged citizen of our Earth place.

The Mindset for Energy Clearing

For us, the general mindset is that matter and spirit are not separate dimensions or separate categories of existence. It is rather, that matter is itself a property of spirit. And that spirit is an inherent property of matter. This posture towards reality is sometimes called animism, or panpsychism. Toast likes the way David Abram once put it, of “being a Matter Realist” (‘materialist’).

Here are a list of points we discuss in this episode.

  • Declutter – tidy things up, literally clear table tops and surfaces

  • Physically clean – dust, vacuum, wipe down spaces

  • Smudging – reverently burning a natural substance such as dried white sage, cedar, or other leaves or wood, to carry and invoke the intentions and energy of blessing, right-relationship, and clearing and cleansing. Obtaining smudge sticks from indigenous makers who are honoring, protecting, and perpetuating their heritage traditions is the best. Let’s hear it for genuine TEK (Traditional Ecological Knowledge) instead of just human-centered tech.

  • Fire – Don’t do this alone. Have someone who can carry water and/or a wet towel next to you as a safety precaution. Use a stainless steel pot with a long handle (not a stock pot) specifically for this ritual, also a non-flammable pot-holder. Put epsom salts into the pot about 2” high, pour a drizzle of rubbing alcohol into this epsom salt, and then throw a lighted match into the pot and carry it throughout the space with the intention of clearing. Our experience is that the large size of this flame helps to catalyze a deeper and broader effect than a candle flame would.

  • Clearing Spray – These are literally bottles of a liquid mixture blended specifically for use in space clearing. They often contain essential oils, and we like ones that contain flower essences. You literally spray it, like a mister, into the air of your rooms.

  • Clapping – Clap your hands, especially in the corners of rooms where energy can get stuck.

  • Bell or Sound Bowl – Sounds and tones can have a purifying effect, hence their use in many religions and rituals.

  • Crystals – Certain crystals are known for the natural effect they have, of clearing or absorbing lower energies. Citrine and Selenite are self-cleansing crystals. Black Tourmaline and Black Obsidian do need to be cleansed, by washing them with soap and water, and/or by other means, from time to time.

  • Salt – Put rock salt in the corners of a room, and/or lay down a line of salt across window sills. Leave it there for a couple days or so. Then release it back to the earth.

  • Wash Your Hands and Arms – After doing energy clearing, wash your hands and arms even up to your elbows, with the intention of cleansing your own self.
