141 Happy Thanksgiving

This is a ‘talk story’ episode.

‘Talk story’ is the Hawaiian pidgin english phrase for “shooting the breeze.”

In this episode, you’ll hear us Hawaii born & raised folks freaking out about fall foliage (which you can never see in Hawaii), and reminiscing about other Thanksgiving-related stuff like: food, cooking, and a bonus Thanksgiving playlist with a twist: Thanksgiving 100 Years Ago

A list of things that make an appearance (make a sound?) in this ep:

  • Food culture in old time (‘70s-‘80s) and present-time, Hawaii

  • pūpū, the Hawaiian term for appetizers

  • Because of COVID, our relationship to food and cooking changed

  • Because of COVID, Toast’s (and therefore Siena’s) relationship to music changed

  • creepy old-timey music

CORRECTION: in the playlist we discuss, the oldest song is not from 1920 “Look For The Silver Lining” (Marion Harris), but from the 1830s “Turkey In The Straw.” The newest song on the playlist is not 1960’s “Rhode Island Is Famous for You” (Blossom Dearie), but 1964’s “Early Autumn” (Ella Fitzgerald & Nelson Riddle)
